Cystic acne is a severe type of acne. Just like acne, though, it occurs when the pores of the skin are blocked, causing irritation and inflammation. They are commonly found on the face, but may also be on the arms, neck, and back.
This type of acne cause bumps beneath the skin. What you will usually see on people with cystic acne are just red spots and inflammation, but underneath the skin, there are bumps and infection. This is a painful type of acne.
Cause of It
Just like common acne, it is caused by clogged skin pores. With the addition to oil and dead skin and dirt which clog your pores, there is also the existence of bacteria trapped in your pores. Together, they cause inflammation, infection, swelling, and pain. Resulting in cystic acne.
Factors Which Increase the Risk of It
An individual may have acne, especially during puberty. But common acne may develop into cystic acne because of these factors:
Genes may be a factor which can increase the risk of having cystic acne. If you have other family members who have cystic acne, then there is a possibility that you will also develop one because it is in your family’s genes.
- Acne-prone skin
Other people may have acne-prone skin. Especially those with oily skin, plus the fact that you are too lazy to wash your face regularly, then the risk of you having cystic acne is possible.
Hormonal changes may increase the risk of having cystic acne. As our bodies mature, they change, affecting our hormones. These changes may alter specific functions of our body. It may reduce our body’s immunity, making us prone to infection and other health conditions.
Hormonal changes may also happen when there is an intake of hormonal pills and oral contraceptives.
Stress is one factor which can increase the risk of having cystic acne. Stress does not only result to acne. It may also cause other health conditions like hypertension, depression and other disorders.
Treatment of Cystic Acne
Severe acne like this may be treated using several methods. These methods are:
- Injection of steroids
Steroids are used to treat acne in this severity. Triamcinolone is a corticosteroid medication. It is injected directly into a cyst to reduce its inflammation. This is a procedure which must be done by a dermatologist. This procedure can not only reduce inflammation, but it can also prevent scarring.
- Benzoyl peroxide
Benzoyl peroxide is a treatment which is commonly used by those people who have acne problems. Since cystic acne is a type of acne, benzoyl peroxide may also be used to treat it.
An effective way of treating cystic acne is by using a prescription drug called isotretinoin. Since it is effective, it is the first choice by skin specialists when it comes to treating severe cases of acne like this one. But this drug has some side effects, and it is not recommended for pregnant women as it may be dangerous to the baby. Isotretinoin may also be used for moderate acne, but only if oral antibiotics do not work.
- Birth control pills
Birth control pills are a long-term treatment of acne for women. This kind of pills contains progesterone and estrogen which suppress the production of sebum. This form of therapy is usually for six months or more.
What To Do If You Have Cystic Acne
Acne may be a common thing, especially during puberty. But if it becomes severe and develops into cystic acne, the best thing for you to do is go to a skin specialist and have it treated.
You may treat common acne by yourself, but if what you have is a severe case of acne, do not do self-medication. Treating cystic acne without professional help may worsen it, instead of curing it.
Acne may be common, but it is a factor which can affect your personality. There is a tendency that you develop an inferiority complex because of it. Acne may not be avoided, especially by those with oily skin. Since genes and hormones may also cause it, even if you do not have oily skin, you might be prone to it. A word of advice, keep your face clean. Washing your face regularly and scrubbing once in a while to take out dead skin is advised to lessen, if not avoid the occurrence of any acne.
